Keeping Your Sanity With a Mobile DVD Player

If you get the shakes just thinking of the last road-trip you took with your toddlers or teenagers, you are not alone. It can be tough travelling with kids of any age, for both themselves and their parents! But while you may not be able to turn a car ride into a trip to remember, there are certain damage-control techniques that can ensure you will at least survive the experience, if not enjoy it out right.

Firstly, consider setting some ground rules for the whole family. Decide on certain subjects or even phrases that always seem to get someone's back up, and make it a ground rule that no one is allowed to voice them. Also agree to take turns with setting the temperature in the car, weather windows or the fan is allowed, etc. It's important that everyone be as comfortable as possible during long trips on the road, so play it fair and make sure everyone's voice is heard.

Secondly, invest in a mobile DVD player for your car if you can possible afford it. This might seem like a frivolous expense, but I promise you that if you buy one, you will fall in love with it. Mobile DVD players designed for cars come in a variety of models and screen-sizes, with price-tags to match.

Ideally, your best choice is to go with a headrest DVD player. These players come installed in headrests that you simply swap for your existing headrest, so the screen and player are literally in the back of the front-seat headrests, so they take up no extra space, can't get bumped around or become air-born, and are more easily hidden from potential thieves. Headrest DVD players tend to be a little more expensive than other types of mobile DVD system, but you can pick a single player up for anywhere from $90-$250, and a set of two for anywhere between $200-$500.

Other choices for in-car entertainment include flip-down TV's and DVD players, and portable and in-dash DVD players, but these are far less safe and are much more visible to thieves.

Particularly if you can manage a DVD player per child (if you have two kids, you can buy a set of 2 headrest DVD players for a moderate sum), your road trip will become dramatically easier. Not only will your kids be passively entertained and quiet, but if they each have a player of their own, they won't even have to squabble over what movie to pick! Alternatively, if you can only afford one player or have more than 2 children, just make sure you establish ground rules about taking turns choosing a DVD to keep tempers to a minimum.

You can even keep movie-time educational by occasionally choosing a documentary or historical film, then start a conversation and encourage a family discussion about the subject.

Finally, try to remember to have relax and have fun! So what if you are a bit delayed in reaching your destination. It's worth being a bit late in order to make sure the whole family arrives happy and comfortable. Nothing kills a nice vacation like resentments and family members refusing to speak to each other! So above all, just trust that everything will work out, keep calm and cool, and enjoy the ride.

As far as modern day inventions go, there are definitely more impressive and advanced gadgets than the Portable DVD Player. The Ipad comes foremost to mind - But not very many offer as much entertainment value, especially when you're away from a wi-fi connection.

It's a funny thing to wonder, but what did people do 100 years ago, before the advent of modern electronic devices? It wasn't very long ago, relatively speaking that things such as radio, television and telephones did not exist. People had to keep themselves busy by interacting and having meaningful conversation with one-another. Imagine that! Today, we have the technology to speak (sometimes face to face) to anyone via computer connection, but will rarely go out of our way to converse with even our closest neighbor. In addition to that fact, we have been served in the recent decade with more technological advances as never before.

As many of us are aware, we live in a society where we cannot just sit still and listen to our thoughts. We live in a world of instant gratification, hi-fi wireless access to the world wide web just about everywhere we go and rarely do you see folks just strolling around or sitting quietly without an electronic gadget to keep them occupied. You can argue that having all this technology is a good thing. It certainly makes life and keeping oneself entertained much easier to achieve.

That being said, dear reader, brings me to a subject very close to my heart. It is my opinion that the noble DVD player, no matter how technologically advanced we get will never become extinct as far as media types go. Not for home entertainment, but rather for ability and flexibility of the Portable DVD player. Nowadays, you can watch a DVD absolutely anywhere your heart desires. In the car, on the roof of your building, by the lake, on the top of mount Everest. Whatever. Our family has owned a set of dual DVD players, which we install on the rear headrests of our truck on long trips, and have kept the kids entertained during those long drives when we go on vacation. Review

Gateway's latest attempt; to out-grow the competition in the slim-desktop battle, is SX2800-01. Competing with Dell 537s and HP's slim line s5160f Gateway has kept the Quad-Core performer under $500 without a monitor yet keeping the design very stylish. It is loaded with Core 2 Quad processor, a 640GB hard drive, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a DVD burner, a multi-format card reader, HDMI output, and a boatload of external expansion ports. The only thing you will find missing from the equation is gritty 3D performance, certainly not for gamers.

The SX2800-01 comes with a glossy plastic front cover hiding the DVD drive and expansion ports; the rest of the exterior is a matte black. Easy to tuck it away beside your desk or along with your entertainment center since it is 14×7x20 inches (HWD).

The SX2800-01 performed near the top of the slim line-PC pack during the benchmark testing-and it was even competitive with many full-size systems. Thanks to its 2.33GHz Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor and 800MHz DDR3 RAM, it managed a score of 9,533 in our CPU-centric 64-bit Cinebench 10 test. This was just behind the HP Pavilion slim line s5160f, which shares the same CPU and scored 9,709, and well ahead of the dual-core Dell Inspiron 537's score of 5,548. Its scores of 3 minutes and 47 seconds for our iTunes encoding test and 4 minutes and 4 seconds for our Windows Media Encoder test were similarly impressive, just edging out the HP system by a second or two on each test.

Though the SX2800-01 was way ahead of Dell's (Score: 3854) however it was still unable to compete with HP (Score: 5010) scoring 4,791 during the PC Mark Vantage test, which examines overall system performance. However, we can blame that to SX2800-01's poor 3D performance. While both the HP and Dell slim lines include dedicated PCI Express 3D-graphics cards, the SX2800-01 relies on the Intel GMA X4500 circuitry that has been built into the motherboard's support chipset. In the DirectX 9 gaming graphics test, the score was limited to just 12.1 frames per second (fps) at 1,280×1,024 resolution, versus the Dell's 30.8fps and the HP's 25.8fps. (We also tried flexing the Gateway system's muscles with our synthetic 3DMark Vantage benchmark test, but it would not run, crashing with a blue screen when we attempted to run it on any setting, even after we updated the graphics drivers to the newest versions.)

In short, the SX2800-01 will perform just fine for casual games like Max Payne or Web-based pastimes. You can always invest in a graphics card to play modern 3D games with reasonable performance. Although, the SX2800-01 offers dramatically better CPU performance than the similarly priced Dell and it costs significantly less than the HP.

With its poor 3D performance, SX2800-01 still offers a lot for non-gaming tasks and other productivity options. With a price under $500, it will please plenty of folks who do not play 3D games at all. Looking for a PC with good performance, and do not plan to crack your PC with additional upgrades the SX2800-01 is a compact, well-performing solution at a surprisingly low price.
